AustCham Beijing welcomes Ms Jan Adams PSM, the recently appointed Australian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China
AustCham Beijing welcomes Ms Jan Adams PSM to her new post as the Australian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China. Ms Adams took her appointment at the beginning of this year in February 2016.
Ms Adams has a strong repertoire of Asian engagement and is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Until recently Ms Adams was Deputy Secretary with responsibility for trade and economic issues. She was appointed Deputy Secretary in April 2013 with responsibility for trade and economic issues. In this role, and previously as head of DFAT’s Free Trade Agreement Division, Ms Adams led the successful FTA negotiations with China, Japan and Korea.
Ms Adams served as Ambassador for the Environment and Ambassador for Climate Change between 2005 and 2008, and as Minister Counsellor (Trade) in Washington from 2000 to 2004. From 1993 to 1996, Ms Adams worked as an Adviser to the Minister for Trade and Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Senator Peter Cook. She also previously worked in the OECD Environment and Trade Directorates in Paris.
Ms Adams holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University and was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2007 for public service in pursuit of Australia’s international objectives on trade negotiations and environment policy.
