{"id":19993,"date":"2016-08-19T16:10:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T08:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/austcham.org\/?p=19993"},"modified":"2016-08-19T16:10:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-19T08:10:00","slug":"ertp190816","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westchina.austcham.org\/?p=19993","title":{"rendered":"Energy &#038; Resources Talking Points 19-08-2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/austcham.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/EnergyTPB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18738\" src=\"http:\/\/austcham.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/EnergyTPB.jpg\" alt=\"EnergyTPB\" width=\"1280\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>In today&#8217;s talking points:\u00a0China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce calls blocked Ausgrid sale a protectionist move;\u00a0China\u2019s zinc smelting industry slashes fees;\u00a0Shale gas to underpin growth in world natural gas production;\u00a0Whitehaven announces rise in profits, thermal coal up<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce calls blocked Ausgrid sale a protectionist move<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the blocked sale of Australia\u2019s largest energy grid, China&#8217;s Ministry of Commerce spokesman Shen Danyang has stated\u00a0&#8220;This kind of decision is protectionist and seriously impacts the willingness of Chinese companies to invest in Australia&#8221;.\u00a0 The statement comes after Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison last week\u00a0announced that State Grid Corp of China and Hong Kong&#8217;s Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings would be prevented from buying electricity network company Ausgrid.\u00a0During a speech last Wednesday,\u00a0Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull\u00a0stated\u00a0that &#8220;political responses to this mood of disaffection can have the potential to destabilise global growth, perhaps even reversing some of the spectacular gains we have made over recent decades through open markets and free trade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/australia-privatisation-ausgrid-correcte-idUSL3N1AY1DU\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>China\u2019s zinc smelting industry slashes fees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fees for turning ore concentrates into refined metals have been cut by 20 percent in a bid to attract raw material as ore supplies.\u00a0 Ore supplies have dropped as commodities giants reduce output to cope with falling zinc prices which slumped to a 6 year low in January due to declining demand in China.\u00a0 Low treatment fees are expected to lead smelters to reduce output and there have been a string of smelter shutdowns by environmental inspectors in China in recent weeks which is adding to the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/energy-commodities\/oil-over-us50-at-6-week-high-on-talk-of-supply-freeze\">Business Times<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shale gas to underpin growth in world natural gas production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Energy Information Administration&#8217;s International Energy Outlook 2016 has forecast shale gas will account for 30% of world natural gas production by 2040 with China the second largest producer in the world.\u00a0 China is one of only four countries to have commercial shale gas production and was one of the first countries outside North America to develop shale resources.
